Is Hourglass Cruelty-Free?

Does Hourglass test on animals or sell in China?

Hourglass Cosmetics is a luxury makeup line that can be found in high-end department stores around the world. But is Hourglass cruelty-free?

For a company to be considered cruelty-free they have to meet all of the following criteria:

  • Do not test any of their products or ingredients on animals
  • Don’t allow others to test on their behalf
  • Do not sell in a country where animal testing is required.

After doing a bit of research, I found that Hourglass does meet the above cruelty-free requirements and is considered to be a cruelty-free makeup brand.

Let’s look into what all of that really means and what you can do about it.

Is Hourglass Certified Cruelty-Free?

When researching a brand’s cruelty-free status my first stop is the certified cruelty-free list. There are three organizations that give official certifications to brands around the world: Leaping Bunny, Peta, and Choose Cruelty-Free.

Hourglass is certified cruelty-free by Peta. That’s wonderful news but Peta does not do a thorough vetting process like Leaping Bunny. So I don’t fully trust their certifications and will continue to research Hourglass.

Does Hourglass Test on Animals?

The next step in my research is going directly to the company’s animal testing policy to see where they stand. Hourglass’s policy can be found in the ‘FAQ’ section of their website. Here is what it states:

“We are a PETA certified, conscientious brand that is proud to offer cruelty free products. Hourglass Cosmetics does not test on animals during product development or production. In addition, we do not provide authorization to any third parties to perform animal testing on our products.”

The above statement addresses all the questions I need to be answered to verify a brand’s cruelty-free status. Next, is finding out if they sell in China.

Is Hourglass Sold in China?

No, Hourglass is not sold in China, a country that requires imported cosmetics to be tested on animals.

Is Hourglass Owned By a Parent Company?

Yes, Hourglass is owned by Unilever, a company that tests on animals. You can view a full list of brands that they own to see which other companies you should avoid.

Is Hourglass Vegan?

Hourglass is not a 100% vegan makeup brand but they do carry some vegan products. Here is a list of a few of them. You can check out their full vegan catalog on their website.

Wrap Up: Is Hourglass Cruelty-Free?

Yes, Hourglass is a cruelty-free makeup brand. They have verified that they do not test their products or ingredients on animals, do not allow others to test on their behalf, and do not sell in a country that requires testing.

Therefore, Hourglass will be added to my list of cruelty-free brands. You can buy their cruelty-free makeup via their website or at Sephora.
